Do you feel bombarded by diets, cleanses, and detoxes?

They’re everywhere we look—in magazines, in the news, popping up on social media, and on late-night TV infomercials.

All telling us the same thing: if you follow a specific restricted plan, you will lose weight and look better.

At Shaping Perspectives, we know that diets, cleanses, and detoxes don’t provide what they promise. We believe there is no “right” or “wrong” way to eat.

And yet…

We also believe there are things you can remove from your diet that will lead to a more confident, joyful, and peaceful life.

When you cleanse these three toxic things from your life, you can begin to live with joy and connect more deeply with yourself and others.

1. Kick out the “Food Judge”.

It’s time to kick out that food critic that lives inside your head.

You know, the one who judges everything you eat or don’t eat, judges your actions, your body, your decisions, and your thoughts.

The judge makes sure to tell you that you made the wrong choices or that you are not—and will never be—good enough, smart enough, disciplined enough, or thin enough.

It is time to move her out!

Removal of this judge is essential for increased self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth.

Say goodbye. It is time to cleanse yourself from the harsh judgment.

I wrote more about this inner food judge in our recent blog, “Judge Foody.” I hope you’ll give it a read!

2. Cut out comparisons.

It’s time to cut out the constant wishes and wants to look or be like someone else.

This includes thoughts like:

  • I wish I looked like that.
  • I would die to have that body.
  • I wish I could eat like that.
  • If only I lived a life like that.
  • I would do anything to eat like that.

Comparing yourself to someone else is a direct blow to your self-esteem.

It will knock you down and deteriorate your self-esteem, self-worth, and body image in seconds flat.

One of the biggest “aha moments” I ever had was when I heard (and more importantly, believed) this:

There is no one in the world that is you: no one has had your experiences, has your unique gene pool, or has lived your life. Period.

Comparing yourself to someone else is like comparing apples to oranges. If you are an apple, you can wish all you want, but you will never become an orange.

It is time to remove yourself from the need to compare from your diet, while you step into yourself to be you…as only you can.

I recently wrote about the steps you can take to better care for yourself and recognize you’re worth it! Read the 9 Steps to Ultimate Self-Acceptance here.

3. Nix the negative self-talk.

How many years have you heard that negative voice inside your head telling you you’re “stupid,” “fat,” or “clumsy,” or that you are a failure and a big disappointment?

I’ve written a lot about battling negative self-talk. Don’t miss these 3 Steps for More Positive Self-Talk.

As we discussed in our last blog, your thoughts become intricate superhighways in your brain, programmed to take control of any situation in a moment’s notice.

The only way to do something about these strong pathways is to stop driving along them and begin to create some new positive pathways for yourself. You do this by talking to yourself with kindness, compassion, and strength.

The brain is malleable and changeable. Cleanse yourself of negative self-talk and damaging pathways and try some of these on for size:

  • “I am whole and complete, just as I am.”
  • “I am capable of doing this.”
  • “It is OK for me to be happy.”
  • “I am strong and I am getting stronger every day.”
  • “I am doing the best I can.”
  • “Taking care of myself feels good.”

Removing these toxic components from your “diet” is not a quick fix.

It is ultimately a cleanse of the soul.
